This page is a little introduction for new and existing clients to get to know their Pilates teacher a little bit better! (After all we don’t have much time to talk in class do we?!)
My name is Stephanie Hodson, I am 26 years old and I have been practising Pilates since the young age of 15! My very first introduction to the Practice was through Amanda when she started up classes in my local gym back in 2003. I instantly fell in love, not only with Pilates as a form of exercise, but with Amanda’s teaching style.
I continued with my other recreational sports like Netball, training in the gym and Bodypump classes, but the one thing I couldn’t live without was my weekly Pilates class! I soon started to take up 2 classes a week, and before I knew it I’d been practising Pilates for 2 years! I had seen my body shape change from a young girl, into a woman, and found curves I never even knew existed!
After about 4 years of Pilates, I had to leave England for a while during my degree to go and work abroad, 6 months in Berlin and 6 months in Paris. In Berlin most classes were over an hour away by train, which is not inviting during the dark winter months with temperatures in and around -23 degrees! However, in Paris I found a small private Pilates studio ‘Espace Saint Louis’ just a few metro stops away, and living there in Spring /Summer meant lovely light evenings and warm weather! Here I managed to gain some experience from a top Pilates instructor and former professional ballet dancer, who had come over from LA to teach and give private tuition. The classes were a great way to see how other people teach the practice internationally, and obviously challenged my language skills!
Once I returned to the UK I soon went back to my local gym as I couldn’t cope without Amanda’s classes in my life! After I graduated from University, I started work in Manchester and no longer needed my gym membership, and by this time Amanda had set up classes in church halls and later on in her private studio which I attended whenever I could.
During the latter end of 2011, I started to desire change in my life and wanted to do something for myself and become my own boss. After a hard year within my family circle and a lot of trauma, I literally woke up one day with my motto ‘Live life to the full’ in my head and realised that life really is too short. From here on in I started to look into Pilates as a career and approached Amanda at what seemed just the right time! She was looking to expand the studio but could not think of anyone who could teach alongside her….until I came along! With lots of new and exciting opportunities happening in my life, from winning my first ever Beauty Pageant (which I owe to Pilates for my posture and walk on stage!), to going on national TV, I just knew it was the right time in my life to hand in my notice at my old job and start my Pilates training whilst my time was flexible.
From January 2012 to September 2012 I spent all my days in the studio with Amanda voluntarily, watching and observing her classes, and listening to her extensive knowledge of the body as she taught. It’s from this personal, invaluable experience from Amanda that I owe my success in teaching.
For over 12 months I trained with Future Fit training school and completed my Level 2 Anatomy & Physiology and my Mat Based Pilates Fundamental workshop first, before becoming a fully qualified Pilates Specialist and finishing my Level 3 in Advanced Mat Based Pilates towards the end of 2012.
After a long hard year, I owe everything to my mentor, and true friend, Amanda, as without the time and effort she put into me helping me become the best Pilates teacher I can be, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I also have to say that, without my determination, passion and enjoyment for Pilates, I wouldn’t be teaching the practice at all. Go to any Pilates class anywhere, and I can guarantee that you won’t find 2 more passionate instructors than me and Amanda, who have given up everything to not only try and make a living out of our love for the Practice, but to help people get the most of their bodies during their lifetime, and spread the word of the classic mat based Pilates Practice that Joe created himself.
And just to finish off, here is my favourite Pilates quote of all time:
“In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference, In 20 sessions, you will see the difference. And in 30 sessions, you’ll be on your way to having a whole new body.” – Joseph Pilates
